Ok, this is another of the new-to-me tunes that my hammered dulcimer friend has me learning. I can see why she knows it because the Fiddler's Companion says that it was popularized in the US by Grey Larsen & Malcolm Dalglish. (come to think of it, I must have heard it there too. It was on Banish Misfortune and I had that LP) That site further states:

I had forgotten about this tune until I found it on banjo at Cathy Moore's site. I first heard this played by a Swedish fiddle trio that went by the name "The Three Generations" and who used to play on the Prairie Home Companion in the mid 1970s. I used to play it on dulcimer before I started the banjo, and forgot about it before I got to the point of being able to play such things. Such a good tune.
